Theraplay
When your child has big reactions—meltdowns, refusal, or shutting down—it can feel overwhelming to know what to do. Theraplay is an evidence-based approach that uses structured play with both parent and child together in the room to build connection and support regulation as it’s happening. You get
real-time support so you can better understand your child and respond with more confidence and connection.

About Theraplay

What is Theraplay?
Theraplay is an evidence-based, attachment-focused approach that strengthens the connection between parent and child . Sessions are active and engaging, with both parent and child in the room participating in structured, playful interactions. Rather than talking about challenges, we focus on what’s happening in the moment—using the relationship itself as the pathway for change. This might look like supporting you in taking a clear, confident lead when your child is struggling, using playfulness to reduce power struggles, or incorporating nurturing touch to help your child feel calmer and more secure. Over time, these moments build a stronger sense of safety, trust, and connection between you and your child.

Who is Theraplay for?
Theraplay is designed for children
around ages 2-11 and their caregivers.
It can be especially helpful for children who have big reactions, difficulty with emotion regulation, challenges with connection, or patterns of defiance, withdrawal, or anxiety. In this approach, we understand behavior in the context of the relationship. Rather than focusing on what’s “wrong,” we look at what your child needs and find more connected and effective ways of responding. It’s a good fit for parents who want to better understand their child and feel more confident in how they respond.

How does it help?
By working with you and your child in real time, we shift patterns as they’re happening and create new ways of interacting. Play sessions are videotaped so that in parent-only sessions we can slow things down and reflect together, gaining a clearer understanding of what your child is experiencing in the moment and what you’re noticing as a parent. When we look closely at moments of disconnect or repair, we build greater empathy for your child’s inner experience and explore how you want to show up
as a parent.
